Everybody has a story. Some people just need a microphone.

On Thursday, November 12, we're turning down the lights and turning up the stories at Vivalon After Dark!

Inspired by The Moth, this is an evening of true stories told live by real people. Funny stories. Moving stories. Stories that take an unexpected left turn and end up somewhere nobody saw coming.

Some people arrive with a story ready to tell. Others get inspired somewhere along the way. And some just come to listen, laugh, and discover something about a person they might never otherwise have met.

That's the fun of it. Different generations, different experiences, and a room full of people discovering what they have in common.

And yes, I'll be there helping keep the storytelling train on the tracks. Mostly.

Don't Ghost Your Vote!

Halloween is over, but there's still one thing you shouldn't let disappear: Your voice.

Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, and you don't have to wait until then to cast your ballot.

Learn about the candidates. Understand the issues. Make your choices.

And then make sure your voice is heard.

Because this is one story you actually get to help write.

Don't ghost your vote.

Not people. Parts of our stories.

The embarrassing detail. The uncomfortable feeling. The moment when we were completely, spectacularly wrong.

We cut those things because we think they'll make us look bad. But often, they're the very things that make an audience lean in.

Swipe through for five things worth keeping in your next story.

What's a detail you've been tempted to leave out?

Walking around New Orleans, taking it all in, and thinking about stories.

A few days ago, I was at TEA SATE North America talking about something that’s been on my mind for a long time: how we use culture to shape the experiences we create.

I shared a story about Hueh, a cab driver I met in Vietnam. I asked him to take me somewhere “normal,” somewhere he would go himself. I thought that meant a local bar or restaurant.

Instead, I ended up at his apartment, playing with his kid, drinking grape soda, and later sitting outside with his friends and neighbors, playing cards and drinking snake wine.

I couldn’t have planned that experience. And that’s exactly what made it special.

It wasn’t about seeing the sights or checking something off a list. It was about getting a little glimpse into someone else’s life, in a way I never would have if I’d stayed in my usual tourist bubble.

That story became part of my presentation, “Roots Before Rides: Using Cultural Truth as Design Material.”

Anyway, back to wandering around New Orleans. It’s a good place to slow down, look around, and remember that every place has stories worth paying attention to.

Apparently, I’m spending Halloween week surrounded by STRANGE ENCOUNTERS and a DOUBLE CREATURE. Honestly, that feels about right.
On Tuesday, October 27, I’ll host The Moth San Francisco StorySLAM: “Strange Encounters.”

True, five-minute stories about brushes with the peculiar, the wild, and the kind of encounter that still makes you wonder exactly what happened.

The storytellers know how their stories end. What they don’t know is whether their names will be drawn from the hat or what might happen when they step onto the stage and bring those memories back to life.

Then, on Halloween night, I’ll perform with BATS Improv in:
DOUBLE CREATURE: IMPROVISED HORROR

Two terrifying tales. Created entirely on the spot.

No script. No predetermined characters. No escape plan. The audience gives us the inspiration and we discover the monsters, victims, dark corridors, terrible decisions, and unspeakable horrors together.

We genuinely have no idea what is going to happen. What could be scarier than that? :)

Both shows rely on the same skills:
Listen closely.
Notice what changes.
Trust the people beside you.
Enter the unknown.

Let go of the plan when something unexpected comes creeping out of the darkness.

We often treat preparation and spontaneity as opposites. They aren’t. Preparation gives you something solid to stand on. Presence helps you notice the trapdoor opening underneath you.

Come spend Halloween week with me… if you dare.

THE MOTH: STRANGE ENCOUNTERS
Tuesday, October 27 | 7:30 PM
Public Works, San Francisco

BATS IMPROV: DOUBLE CREATURE
Saturday, October 31 | 8:00 PM
BATS Bayfront Theatre, Fort Mason
