Two events in one day, and both reminded me of the same thing in different ways.

Earlier at The Commonwealth Club of California, the conversation was more reflective: zoomed out, looking at how storytelling connects to larger ideas and how we interpret the world around us through narrative.

Later at Lark Theater for Simply Said, it was the opposite experience in terms of setting, but the same core idea: people getting up and sharing real, simple, honest stories in front of a live audience.

The theme of the latter was “Mix Tape” and we got the mix tape of stories: Birth (of a sea lion!), death, love, loss, magic + mysticism, and journeys - told through the soundtracks of our lives.

What stood out to me most was how quickly people connect when a story is clear and grounded in something real.

Different rooms. Different formats. Same reminder: stories don’t need to be complicated to matter.

What is a story?

At a recent author talk at Kibbitz Cafe, I shared a simple but powerful idea:
A story isn’t just a sequence of events. It’s what happens when something changes — in you, in someone else, or in the way you understand the moment.

That’s what makes storytelling so human.
Not perfection.
Not performance.
Just change.

A story can be small.
It can be quiet.
It can be ordinary on the surface.

But if there’s meaning in the shift, there’s a story worth telling.

June 16 is a full storytelling day for me.

In the afternoon, I’ll be at The Commonwealth Club of California (5:30–6:30 PM), joining a conversation around storytelling and how it shows up in bigger cultural and world contexts.

Later that night, I’ll be at Lark Theater (8:00pm) hosting Simply Said, a live storytelling event where people share real stories on stage.

For me, these two events sit nicely together. One is more conversation-based and reflective. The other is direct, personal, and in front of an audience. But both are really about the same thing: how people use stories to make sense of what they’ve experienced.
